In this lesson, we are going to learn all about why it’s important to eat different fruits and vegetables, and how color plays a role in telling us what’s inside them!
To start, download the “Rainbow Education packet”. Let’s practice sorting different fruits and vegetables by their colors! Print and cut the fruit and vegetable cards in the packet, then sort them based on color. For simplicity, we are going to combine the purple and blue fruits and vegetables as they often have the same health benefits.
Phytonutrients are the nutrients found in fruits and vegetables that can help prevent disease and keep your body working at its best! Different colored fruits and vegetables have different vitamins and minerals in them. In order to grow big and strong, we need to make sure we eat lots of different colored fruits and vegetables so we get all the vitamins and nutrients our bodies need. That’s why we say we need to eat a rainbow every day!
Many people don’t get enough phytonutrients, so this activity is meant to help you make choices that will make sure your body is getting all the important nutrition it needs. Now that you know how important it is to eat a rainbow of fruits and vegetables every day, use the Eat a Rainbow chart, found in the Rainbow Education packet, to keep track of the colors you eat and to help make sure you are getting all the colors you need!
Challenge: Invent a recipe that includes fruits and/or vegetables from each color of the rainbow. We would love to see your recipe and photos of you and your friends or family enjoying it!
