KFB Volunteer of the Week: Tom Woodhull

Volunteers at Kids’ Food Basket fuel our mission each day through planting, harvesting, prepping, packing, and delivering nourishing food. They drive our success and help all children thrive.

Many of our Sack Supper packers have been a part of the mission since the very beginning. Whether they have been with KFB for 18 years, or it is their first time as a packer, their impact goes far beyond the shift. They pack thousands of meals with kindness and love to ensure thousands of children across West Michigan receive a healthy nourishing meal each evening.

Our facilitators oversee our daily volunteer sessions by welcoming guests, getting them started on their project, ensuring all health department rules are followed and keeping track of our production numbers.  They are truly like an extension of our staff and play such a critical role!

We are so grateful to every single volunteer that engages with us as we would not be able to nourish children to reach their full potential if it wasn’t for their generosity and compassion for their community and neighbors.

Name: Tom Woodhull
KFB Volunteer Experience: Packing Facilitator

How did you first hear about Kids’ Food Basket?
I went online and searched for volunteer opportunities in Grand Rapids. Kids’ Food Basket came up and I signed up. I had never heard of Kids’ Food Basket, but I had volunteered at other places that feed people. I worked in the food industry for many years and thought this would mesh with what I was already doing.

Why did you choose to volunteer?
I have been volunteering for 30 years. I started back in 1991 at God’s Kitchen with Mary K Hoodhood, KFB Founder, who was the volunteer coordinator there. I thought there is a need and I have to do something to help and put energy into the community. I first went with friends to volunteer and I liked it, so I decided to continue!

What is your favorite part about volunteering with Kids’ Food Basket?
Meeting all the nice people, staff and volunteers. I run into people who I knew from earlier in life and now they volunteer.

Have you learned anything new during your time volunteering?
I volunteered as a waiter for Feast for Kids and that was the most exciting thing to do. I’m not a professional waiter and I spilled a little wine, but it was great.

Describe your experience with Kids Food Basket in one word.
Fun.

Why do you think someone should sign up and volunteer with Kids’ Food Basket?
I learned that it takes a lot of effort by a lot of people. I’ve noticed that volunteers grow fond of the experience they gain with the organization.

Favorite fruit or vegetable and way to eat it?
I love potatoes! There is no wrong way to eat a potato! I also like Red Delicious apples!
