What is KFB’s mission and foundations?
KFB’s mission is to nourish children to reach their full potential. Our operations focus on increasing food access, community agriculture and educational programming.

How is KFB funded?
KFB is about 90% philanthropically funded, with the largest portion of funds coming from individual donors. The other 10% comes from government budget allocations, government programs and grant awards.
What is Food Insecurity?
Food insecurity is more than just not having enough food to eat. It is also the lack of access to the food needed to maintain good health. According to the US Department of Agriculture, this can mean reduced quality, variety or desirability of diet (low food insecurity) or the disruption of eating and reduced food intake (high food insecurity).
Who is affected by Food Insecurity?
Many people experiencing food insecurity are what the United Way refers to as “Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed (ALICE)” families. These are neighbors who are working full time, often in jobs that are a service to the community, but whose income is still not enough to make ends meet. Often, eliminating healthy whole food, which is more expensive, is one of the first difficult choices these families make.
What does food insecurity look like in West Michigan?
More than 153,000 people in Kent, Muskegon, Ottawa and Allegan counties experience food insecurity. More than 41,000 of them are children, representing 14.4 % of the child population. (Source: 2023 Kids Count data from The Annie E. Casey Foundation)
I am looking for food assistance. Where can I go?
KFB largely uses a school and pantry-based distribution model. To receive direct food assistance, please call the United Way’s helpline at 2-1-1.
Can I buy honey from Kids’ Food Basket?
Yes! Honey from our very own KFBees is available in each of our three locations and may be purchased with a credit/debit card or digital wallet (no cash).
What forms of payment do you accept for honey purchases?
We accept credit or debit card and digital wallet payments only (no cash).
Can I buy Kids’ Food Basket apparel?
Yes, we have an online storefront full of colorful ways to wear your support! Apparel is available for purchase online only and is not sold onsite.
