Access

Nourishing meals and fresh food for children and families.

Access is the foundation of good health. Everyone deserves consistent access to nutritious food.

Our operations help ensure this human right through nutrient-dense food distribution to kids and families in West Michigan and advocacy for a future where good food is more readily available for all.

Meal Distribution

Our flagship Sack Supper program and Weekend Meal (sponsored by Meijer) delivery provides thousands of dependable, healthy evening meals to kids each weekday through school and program site distribution.

Sack Suppers

Sack Suppers are healthy evening meals distributed to children in West Michigan so that they can have access to good nutritious food that they need to thrive.

  • Each Sack Supper contains a serving of vegetables, fruit, protein and a healthy snack.
  • Thousands of Sack Suppers are prepped, packed and delivered by volunteers daily across our three locations.

Weekend Meals

Weekend Meals (sponsored by Meijer) are double-sized Sack Suppers delivered on Fridays. These extra-large bags contain more shelf-stable items, meant to provide nutrition throughout the weekend.

Break Bags

Break Bags are extra-large meal bags full of healthy, shelf-stable options that provide nourishment during Thanksgiving, Winter and Spring Break. Break Bags contain both meal and snack items, providing options for days with no school.

Emergency Response

FB has meant consistent access to healthy food for our entire history, and we will continue to be a reliable source of food security that families can count on. Community dedication and generosity like yours has nourished neighbors through polar vortexes, a pandemic, rising costs of groceries and a SNAP assistance lapse.

When the going gets tough, West Michigan gets going. In a short amount of time, our community and partners mobilize to bridge hunger gaps when emergencies strike. Through the agility and generosity of community, we are dedicated to swift responses that keep good food accessible.

Community Distribution

We also combine access with agriculture to grow thousands of servings of fresh, culturally inclusive produce.

Any fresh food that is not placed in meals for kids is delivered directly to adults and families living in underserved neighborhoods through community distribution methods.

Volunteer-driven farming makes this critical food distribution possible.

Advocacy

It is not enough to meet an immediate need without working toward systemic change that increases healthy food access in the long term.

Our advocacy efforts at the local, state and federal level bring our food system expertise to elected officials and committees, so that they may make informed decisions to create a more nourished West Michigan.

By The Numbers

Our meal distribution programming is making a measurable impact across West Michigan.

Testimonials

This is such a great program to have in schools; we are super grateful for what it offers our family and the community at large! My kindergartner really likes seeing what is on the bags when they’re decorated!

I have a student who will look in his backpack to see if he has a Sack Supper. I think it makes him feel secure knowing there is food available.

The Sack Suppers take a little stress off of a tight food budget—having the extra food after school does make a difference for us.

— Sack Supper Parent

My child can get whatever he wants from the bag, and I don’t have to worry about it being a bunch of junk.

— Sack Supper Parent

I have had a few families really struggling this year due to loss of jobs. Sack Suppers are essential to ensure my students have access to food at home. This allows families a little flexibility in their budget and ensures less worry about what their child has to eat.
