Facilitating Provision: What’s Inside a Sack Supper?

Have you ever wondered about the delicious foods that go into a Sack Supper?

In each decorated bag, Kids’ Food Basket ensures children have access to healthy food from each of the important food groups. We reached out to Dr. Kristi Artz, Lead Physician for Spectrum Health’s Culinary Medicine Program to discuss the overall health benefits for children when they eat good, nutritious food.

“Kids’ Food Basket provides a vital service in safeguarding the health of children in our community, now and for their futures.  The Sack Supper meal is designed to support the health of the whole child, from their brain all the way to the tips of their toes.”

“Many of our country’s most common chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease begin in childhood.  Good nutrition is important for children to reach their full potential and protect them from chronic diseases.” – Dr. Artz

Banana

Whole plant foods like bananas and carrots are an optimal fuel source for growing active children.

Bananas are well known to provide potassium which is important for heart and vascular health.  It’s never too early to eat foods that support and promote heart health!  They also contain a good amount of fiber and resistant starch which promotes a healthy gut.  Gut health plays an important role in supporting our immune system and even our mood.

Carrots

Carrots just might be the ideal lunch and snack option for kids.  This easy to grab food packs a nutritious punch in each delicious crunchy bite.  Carrots are high in antioxidants like beta-carotene important for eye health and cancer-fighting anthocyanins found in deeper colored orange, red and purple carrots.

Yogurt

Unsweetened and lower sugar varieties of yogurt provides a healthy source of protein and calcium, which is especially important for healthy growth of muscles and bones. In combination with exercise and physical activity, children can develop lean muscle, strong bones and maintain a healthy weight.

Trail Mix

Whole grains found in Cheerios are a nutritious treat, especially when paired with raisins for a bit of whole food sweetness.  Whole grains are a mainstay of a healthy diet and should ideally be eaten every day.  Nutrition studies show that whole grains help to improve heart health, protect against cancers and support a healthy weight.

Refried Bean and Cheese Tortilla Rollup

Beans are delicious, versatile and a fantastic source of plant-based protein.  The complex carbohydrates and fiber found in beans keep kids full and provide a steady source of energy.  Beans have a wide variety of vitamins and minerals such as iron, zinc, folate and potassium and provide a myriad of health benefits.
